Members of the Santa Cruz Elks Lodge partnered with Boy Scout Troop 614 on Sept. 11 to perform a proper flag retirement ceremony at Sunshine Villa in Santa Cruz.
The service was held in the center’s Garden Courtyard with veterans who reside in the retirement community in attendance.
According to the U.S. Flag Code, a flag should be retired “when it is in such condition that it is
no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way.”
“Troop 614 was honored to be requested by the Elks Lodge to conduct the flag retirement
ceremony,” said Steve Trebbe, scoutmaster for Troop 614 and Loma Prieta district chairman.

Bank employees clean up
Santa Cruz County Bank employees volunteered at Rio Del Mar Beach as part of this year’s Save Our Shores Annual Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 18.
Bank volunteers Penny Leonard, Nancy Lopez, Cesar Onesto, and Site Captain Kim Luke joined more than 80 community members and collected nearly 70 pounds of waste from the stretch of shoreline.
The site adopted by the bank for the morning was one of 62 beaches, rivers, and inland areas across Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties that benefit from California’s biggest cleanup of the year. Santa Cruz County Bank has made a commitment to be an environmentally aware and conscientious business.
Matching donations
The Santa Cruz Community Credit Union Board of Directors approved a matching gift program to support 12 local nonprofit organizations in Santa Cruz County, according to a release from the credit union.
For every dollar donated to one of the selected nonprofits, the credit union will
match that gift up to $50,000 (total for all organizations).
For this year’s campaign, which runs through Nov. 30, the credit union selected 12
nonprofit organizations that aligned closely with its mission of providing economic justice for
all. The list includes:
Community Action Board (CAB), Community Bridges, Diversity Center, El Pájaro CDC, Grey Bears, Housing Matters, Homeless Garden Project, Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes, Pajaro Valley Shelter Services, SC Volunteer Center, Second Harvest Food Bank and Valley Churches United Missions.
