Illinois nurse delays retirement to help with pandemic: ‘I can’t leave them yet’

It’s hard for the New Lenox nurse, 68, to pinpoint the moment she knew that her retirement party wouldn’t be happening. It was a slow and clear realization, she said, as news of a new virus began circulating in the hospital in January. She knew how to prepare a hospital for a pandemic. She was, after all, the one who led Ebola training, helping hospital staffers figure out protective gear and prepare to treat patients.
