The head of WA’s gaming regulator announces he will retire this year, days after his appearance before a royal commission into Crown casino’s operations in Perth.
Duncan Ord has been the director general of the Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries since 2017, when his former department of culture and arts merged.
Earlier this week, Mr Ord was questioned at the Perth Casino Royal Commission about his time as head of the department.
The department oversees casino regulator the Gaming and Wagering Commission, of which he is also chair.
The commission was sparked by the Bergin report, which found criminal organisations were likely to have laundered money at Crown Perth.
WA Premier Mark McGowan announced Mr Ord’s retirement alongside that of three other director-generals today.
“The public sector has seen us through some difficult times over the past 18 months brought about by the pandemic,” Mr McGowan said in a statement.
“The departure of some directors general who are retiring has created an opportunity for renewal and rejuvenation in the senior leadership roles within the public sector.
“I thank these directors general for their years of service to the Government and wish them well as they soon embark on their new paths.”
The royal commission into gaming in WA is sitting over a number of weeks, with an interim report expected out in June.
