Landis Zimmerman, vice president and chief investment officer of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 2004, will be retiring from the Institute later this year.
“It has been a privilege to support this extraordinary organization,” said Zimmerman. “I’ve had the incredible opportunity to work alongside deeply talented investment and operations professionals, and leading scientists, to steward resources that will advance science and education for generations to come. It’s difficult to leave HHMI, but I am confident that our endowment is in very good hands and will continue to support the Institute’s powerful impact on the world.”
Clayton Rose, Chair of the HHMI Trustees, lauded Zimmerman’s performance over the past 17 years: “Landis’s management of our endowment has been outstanding. His long-term perspective, risk management capabilities, leadership and professional development skills, and careful attention to asset allocation and manager selection have been central to the growth of the endowment, which has allowed us to fulfill our mission as the leading biomedical research and science education institution.”
HHMI President Erin O’Shea noted that Zimmerman has served under three successive presidents at the Institute. “Landis has long been a trusted advisor and valued member of HHMI leadership,” O’Shea said. “I want to thank Landis for being a strategic partner, colleague, and friend. We will miss him greatly.”
HHMI’s endowment is invested in a globally diversified portfolio. When Zimmerman arrived at HHMI in 2004, the endowment was valued at roughly $13 billion. At the end of fiscal year 2020, HHMI reported $21 billion in consolidated diversified net assets.
HHMI has retained search firm David Barrett Partners to identify its next chief investment officer.
